American Lady vs. Painted Lady Butterfly(s)

Hi on this extremely humid, cloudy ,rainy Labor Day in early September. Since I have not seen any new butterflies for the year, I thought it more appropriate to post some similar butterflies to help the less experienced. Today, as the heading suggests, it will be showing both American Lady and Painted Lady butterfly. The Painted Lady has a lot more black markings on the top wing surface and the bottom rear wing shows four smaller eye spots. However the American Lady is more orange/red on top, lacking quite a bit of black markings on the top surface and the bottom rear wing shows just two large eye spots. Either top surface or wings up, giving a bottom surface view, are adequate to tell the differences between these very similar species. Below are a few photos of each with both views to show the similarities/differences. Have a great day, Denis
